Anibal “Andy” Collazo

As a young boy growing up in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, Anibal “Andy” Collazo always loved to draw and paint, but never dreamed he would become an artist. Mr. Collazo was born in Puerto Rico but credits the Chelsea section where he grew up as an inspiration in developing his creative side.

He was not able to hone his skills in art school, but instead joined the U.S. Marine Corps and later the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). During his twenty-three years with the FDNY, he earned six unit citations at Engine Company 35 located in East Harlem. He retired from the department in 1991. Ever the artist, Mr. Collazo never let go of his true passion.

One day at the firehouse, someone saw him working on a drawing and asked him to help with the department’s magazine “WNYF” (With New York Firefighters.) The magazine is distributed quarterly and is the official training publication of the New York City Fire Department. It is also distributed around the world. He eventually became the art director of the magazine and held this position for about five years.

Mr. Collazo dedicates his art to the heroes of September 11, 2001. His artwork jumps off the canvas with realistic clarity and heartfelt emotion. It depicts the bravery, dedication, and heroism of these firefighters on that historic day. He wants the viewer of his art to connect to the paintings vicariously, feeling the firefighter’s anguish, his helplessness to the loss of 343 brother firefighters. The front cover photo of his painting “Parade of Heros” expresses the pride and comraderie of New York City’s Bravest.

He is presently an active member of the Pocono Mountain Art Group and has displayed his art in several art shows.

Mr. Collazo has resided in Effort for seventeen years. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen. The couple just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and have a son and daughter and six grandchildren. The eldest grandson, John Digiovanna, is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps.

HOLLYWOOD HISTORY IN HAMLIN

The international flavor of filmmaking through the decades is forever preserved in an archives facility in Wayne County, bringing Hollywood glamour to our own backyard. Located on a 38-acre estate in Hamlin, approximately 100 miles northwest of New York City, The Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) Celeste Bartos Film Preservation Center…

VICTORIAN DANCERS

The Victorian Era is one that brings to mind visions of fancy costumes, prim ideals, thought provoking poetry, and powerful queens. Northeastern Pennsylvania has its very own Victorian entertainment thanks to a charming vintage dance troupe called Top Hats and Lace, Inc.

For some lucky families, there are still a couple weeks left until school starts while others have been back in the classroom since the end of August. But don’t forget, summer isn’t officially over until September 23rd, so there is still some time to celebrate the remaining days of summer vacation…

August 2010 Cover Artist

Ron Gallo

Ron Gallo’s work has been chosen for both local and national juried shows. He has received awards from numerous art associations and institutions. Among them are the prestigious Salmagundi Club in Manhattan, the Woodmere Art Museum of Philadelphia, and the Art Association of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The artist paints every day and tries to adhere to a disciplined schedule. Although at times he paints from life, he is a studio painter, primarily relying on sketches, photos, memory, and his imagination.

A simple engaging message is what he strives for. He often tells a story with a little mystery or humor. In his words, “I want my painting to have a substance and feeling. I often try to entertain as well as communicate. I want to engage the viewer and make him think about what he is seeing. If he can relate my painting to his own experience, all the better.”

When asked who is the greatest influence on his art, Gallo replied, “All of the great painters and my wife, Randee. Her criticism is always constructive, she’s smart, supportive, and the perfect model.”

Before committing himself to a career as a fine artist, he worked in advertising, creating print ads and television commercials.

LET’S GET PHYSICAL

Physical education in the school system has come a long way, and students actually look forward to their gym classes now instead of thinking of any excuse to go to the nurse’s office. Our local schools are recognizing the importance of making sure students are not just active in class, but enjoy activity enough to continue a physically fit way of life into their adult years.

THE BENEFITS OF CHARTER SCHOOLS

A new school year is around the corner, and students throughout the country are preparing to say good-bye to summer and hello to another academic adventure. At some point, as a parent you may contemplate alternative methods of schooling for your child rather than the typical public or private school. For instance, did you ever consider sending your child or teenager to a charter school?

REHABILITATION: ONE STEP AT A TIME

Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services are a saving grace for people who have been through a trauma, an accident, or an illness. For many patients, it is just a matter of relearning basic everyday activities. Certified specialists aid them in utilizing these tasks through speech, occupational and physical therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Patients take it one step at a time and recover at their own pace and to the best of their ability.

VARICOSE VEINS

Varicose veins, although proven to be medically problematic for some and cosmetically concerning for others, are a natural response as we age and our body chemistry changes. As unsightly as these veins may be, they can be found anywhere in the body but are most commonly developed in the thigh and foot area. About fifty percent of men and women over the age of fifty are likely to develop varicose veins; however, according to studies, varicose veins are more prevalent in women.

July 2010 Cover Artist

Joe Kosik

From the moment Joe used his mother’s favorite lipstick to draw on the carpet as a two year old, he was destined to be an artist. Now – all grown up – Joe is a graphic designer by profession and has spent the majority of his career creating art in the arena of advertising. While graphic design is something he enjoys very much, painting – both digital and conventional – is what Joe finds most rewarding.

When creating a piece, it begins with a general vision and then goes through an evolution of sorts. The finished product inevitably has elements that weren’t thought of at conception. For Joe, his art is usually an expression of mood. For example, the featured work was created with the hope of eliciting a sense of serenity and a feeling of rest after a seemingly long, hot day. The flag symbolizes the sacrifices made so that others can live free…free to build a house, a home, a sanctuary.

Originally from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area, Joe currently lives in Binghamton, NY where he is Art Director at Rosanne Sall Advertising. He is a proud graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. His work can be viewed at jkosik.homestead.com. He can be contacted by e-mail at jkosik@verizon.net.

John Rocklin

With an ear for real, down home music and an eye for the artistic, John Rocklin captures moments in time and history in the lives and performances of musicians.

Born September 11, 1962, John grew up in an artistic environment, his father being noted sculptor, Raymond Rocklin. With a passion for music and an eye that saw the world in pictures, there came a point in John’s life when he took up the camera to try to be able to capture what he was seeing and show it to others as he saw it.

“I was always framing pictures in my head,” remembers John. “It is a combination of the visual and the essence of the spirit that surrounds both people and places… and to try to capture that visually. I think that is what happens when everything is working.”

John’s work has been shown at many galleries, including at the Big Eddy Gallery in Narrowsburg, NY, The Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville, NY, The Katonah Museum in Katonah, NY, The Goggleworks, in Reading, Pennsylvania, and his latest exhibition opens June 12th at The Hanson Gallery in Honesdale.

John, who is also Co-Founder and Musical Director of The Honesdale Roots & Rhythm Festival, sings and plays guitar in an Americana band called “The Crackers.” John’s Studio, which, as well as his life, he shares with Danielle Herzog, is located in Honesdale. Please find him at www.johnrocklinphotography.com.

JOHN NEMETH ‘NAMES THE DAY’ FOR HONESDALE

There are some classic names from the golden age of soul music that come up during the course of a conversation with John Nemeth. Legendary shouters like Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, and Otis Redding all come to mind when listening to the Boise, Idaho, native belt out a funky, emotive tune. Nemeth’s bound to make it messy and spill some soul all over the stage at this year’s Honesdale Roots & Rhythm Festival on Saturday, June 19th.
NEPA MUSIC

It’s that time of year again…The warm summer season brings endless afternoons of swimming, sunning, boating and sightseeing. It’s also ideal for listening to music outdoors and Northeastern Pennsylvania is THE place to visit for live music this summer.

Two men in their late 20s are keeping it real and making music they love, not necessarily what you’d expect to hear from young male musicians. The music duo, Kenny Luck of Wilkes-Barre and Phil Yurkon of the Philadelphia area, prefers jamming out adult contemporary pop tunes rather than loud and aggressive rock music.

James Dargocey

I have always looked up to my grandfather. As a child, I wanted a camera just like his – knowing that its lenses could be changed, but not knowing what it was called. Grandpa took the best pictures – he seemed to be able to catch the precise moment when someone’s cheeks were big and puffy, eyes closed in mid-wish, while blowing out the candles on their birthday cake. It was something that I wanted to do, too.

Throughout my life, art has been very important to me. I understood composition, but I was not very good with drawing and putting my thoughts and feelings on paper with a brush or pen. Photography has been my creative outlet and an important learning experience in my life.

I enjoy trying new things with the camera whenever I photograph, whether it is using different angles, settings, exposures, or moods. At times, I stumble across an interesting place and photograph it on multiple occasions, looking for the perfect shot and lighting.

It can be challenging for me to just go out and “shoot,” and I prefer to be on a motivation or creative “kick.” My motivation seems to come in nice long spurts. The moments of non-motivation do not last long, especially when I see a new piece completed by a fellow artist. Their new work inspires me to also create something new.

There are times when I’m not sure if a photograph is successful until I see it printed and observe if it portrays the way I originally saw the shot, situation, or area. It has to feel right although sometimes the best shots seem to occur by accident. Like all artists, I’ve learned that my favorites may not be everyone else’s favorites!

My friends include sculptors, tattoo artists, painters, writers, spinners, and knitters. Each has inspired me and contributed to my work, and I appreciate what I’ve learned from them.

In the near future, I plan to explore digital and film manipulation to add layers and more depth to my work. I also want to find ways to use props in my photographs. I have just begun using live subjects in compositions and hope to continue in this direction.
