The realized dream of an American Airlines pilot heading for retirement, Calkins Creek Vineyard is situated in a picturesque area of family farms north of Honesdale, PA, and just west of the New York State border. It all started back in 2000 when Michael Stone began planting both American and French grapevines on the gentle sloped hillside near the old weathered barn that belonged to his wife’s family for generations. While the farm had many out-buildings, none met the needs of a new vineyard. So, in 2005, a 12×40 arched underground wine cellar was constructed to keep the vineyard’s wines at the constant temperature of about 50 degrees as they age to perfection. Today, this spectacular underground vault shares the limelight on the vineyard grounds with the hangar which houses Mike’s yellow Piper Cub single engine plane, the newly-constructed production facilities, a comfortable wood-paneled tasting room, and plenty of outdoor space for wandering or just enjoying the panoramic views.
