With the introduction of its new packaging, Eagle Rock Winery is the first of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s wineries to offer its wine in two options – glass or plastic. The new bottles are made of polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET. These bottles look like ordinary plastic. Having the wine bottled in PET as opposed to the glass will make transportation lighter, and the bottles would be easier to recycle. In fact, bottling in PET will reduce product waste by 85 percent.
Eagle Rock decided to start bottling their wines in plastic to save on freight fees and to reduce the wear and tear on bottle handlers. These plastic bottles weigh about 1/3 of a traditional glass bottle. Since the weight is drastically different, the freight cost will decrease. When Eagle Rock found out the start-up cost was low and there would be less stress on their backs, they began offering the plastic wine bottles.
The new bottles are great to take places where shattered glass is more problematic, such as picnics, pools, or outdoor events. Carrying the traditional-sized bottles makes picking a serving size simple. These bottles can be slipped into the ice bucket, cooler, refrigerator or a backpack. They all have screw-on tops, so corkscrews can be left at home.
As an added benefit, PET bottles are odorless and tasteless, even in warm temperatures, so there will be no taste changes. Minimally, PET should last twelve months and thereafter. Most wines available in plastic should be consumed within a year of purchase. Wines that should be stored in the cellar to be saved for a special occasion should be purchased in a traditional glass bottle.
